One of the most important lessons that a success-minded person can learn is that there are some things you just cannot change in life.
You may love them or hate them, but you cannot change them.
These are facts that you learn to accept and them you learn how to respond. Your response to things you cannot change will make the difference between a happy and successful life or one of worry and frustration.
#1: There is no “fair” in life.
So many people spend their time, or better said, waste their time, fretting over things being fair.
The fact is, there is not fair.
Life was never designed to be fair in the sense that we all achieve at the same level or have the same advantages or disadvantages in life. Life is a challenge and the only “fair” part is that we all have the ability to make it want we are willing to make it.
Our response: Stop fussing about how unfair things are and focus on being the best you can be.
That means not only helping yourself but helping others as well. Those who are caught up in the fairness thinking do little to help others because they worry too much about who will help them.
True success in life comes from the ability to help and give to others without ever expecting anything back in return.
#2: You cannot stop natural disasters
Human kind is at its most vulnerable when it comes to natural disasters. The power of nature is something you, or anyone else can do anything about.
Foolish people think that man is able to control the environment. We have never been in control of it and never will be. We did not create it and we cannot destroy it. Natural disasters have always been a part of life on this planet and it always will be.
Our response: Science is a wonderful thing and has given us the ability to better understand and even at time predict natural disasters.
You cannot stop them but you can be ready for them and you can, through learning, wisdom and preparedness, lessen their effects on your life. Knowledge is a great tool when used to learn and grown, not to cause fear or to manipulate others.
#3: You cannot expect rational behavior out of irrational people
Many of us have been frustrated with people we know personally or know of who insist on doing what is easy to see is wrong.
The problem is that you may be looking at something from a rational perspective and they are not.
For Christians, many times this is when they become so upset because people insist on doing what is wrong and they just do not see the mistakes being made. Put this a different way, you cannot expect godly behavior out of ungodly people.
Our response: Do not get frustrated or angry with people who are unable to see things the same way you do.
That does not mean you accept wrong behavior and tell them they are okay with their own opinion.
See it as a teaching opportunity. By accepting that they do not understand you can have the patience and caring to help them to understand and to learn just what truth is. Be aware too, there will always be people who have no interest in understanding and you cannot control or change them.
#4: You will not eliminate poverty and hunger
It is a noble desire to want to help those who are caught in poverty and feed the hungry of the world.
However, it is not something that will one day go away.
In fact, those who tell us we can eliminate hunger and stop poverty tend to 1) use it as a ploy to get money from people that never really go to the problem, and 2) they do little themselves to stop hunger or poverty.
Even Jesus said we will always have the poor with us. There are many reasons for this, however the main point here is that you understand that you can do something, but you cannot make it go away.
Our response: This is one thing that we may not be able to control but we can do something about.
First and foremost is you must be responsible for your giving and not just a tool in the hands of the greedy.
Be sure that those who you give to are really helping those they say they are. Do the research! Also, help those close to you. You do not have to allow others to send a sandwich to the other side of the world when the kid next door is going without lunch.
#5: There is good and evil in the world
One of the greatest myths, and one of the most destructive myths is that there is no such thing as good or evil.
It is said that whatever you think is good is good and what you think is bad is bad – for you.
That is far from the truth.
It does not take a rocket scientist to know good from evil. This knowledge is born into us. We know when something is good or when we do good things. We also know what is evil and we instinctively hid the evil things we have done.
Why? Because we know that they are evil. Just as it does not take a brilliant mind to know good and evil, it does take a fool to deny them.
Our response: Since we all know the presence of good and evil, we also all have the choice of which we will allow in our lives.
Do not think that it is in your nature to do good all the time. The truth is, as Scripture tells us, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9.
Yet we all have the power to do what is right and good. It is now and always has been a choice. For those who would do what is right and good, do so, deliberately and constant. It is your choice to make.
#6: You need more time
Of all the things, you can do nothing about, time is the top of the list.
Time has been running at 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day since the creation of the world. It has never changed and never will change.
Therefore, the problem is not the amount of time we have, but rather what we do with that time. Time is the only level ground we all have in common. Rich or poor, man or woman, whatever race, belief system or social class, we all have the same amount of time.
Our response: Success-minded people know there is only one thing that give time true value and allows us to be the most productive.
That one thing is action.
When we take action, we make the best use of the time we have. You will see that the biggest difference between successful and unsuccessful people is that successful people take action all the time. If you make action a habit, you will feel like you have all the time in the world. Always remember this: Nothing happens without action. Nothing!
#7: One day, you will die
I do not mean to be morbid or negative here. It is just a fact. We will all face death one day.
Does not matter who you are or what you have achieved in life, no one lives in this body forever. Like time, death is an equal opportunity reality.
The sad thing is that by the time death comes, many people still have not begun to live. Death can be a reward for those who have lived a full and productive life or a curse to those who have only lived for themselves.
Our response: Do not see death as a punishment or unfair end to all things.
Rather, see death as the fulfillment of a goal of a life well lived. A life well lived is a life lived for others and one that has added value to the world.
The persons who have done their best, loved God, had good manners discovered the unknown will in fact, change their world.
As a person of faith, I know that death is not the end for me. When that day of reward comes, I long to hear the words that will make it all worthwhile, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come into My rest.”
#8: The sun will rise tomorrow
To say we live in uncertain times is an understatement. People think that the end is near and see their future as bleak and hopeless.
Here is a fact: Every generation believe they live in the worst it has ever been and in 20 years, this will be called “the good old days”. Yes, the future can be uncertain, however, you can always hold on to the fact that there will be a future.
Since the start of time, the sun has come up in the morning, gone down at night and rose again the next day.
Our response: You may not be able to stop tomorrow from coming, but you can determine if that tomorrow will be great or a disaster.
Believe it or not, you have the power to choose your future.
You make it what you desire it to be. It can be bright and full of hope or dark and just another useless day. People who have goals have a reason to look forward to tomorrow. They have plans and they have something to live for. Those who just take what comes, get what comes.
#9: Anything can happen
To the common person, the thought of anything happening is full of fear. To them, “anything” is never a good thing.
To the uncommon person, the thought of anything happening is full of excitement and hope. The truth is, anything can happen.
The dream you have hoped for can be achieved at last. The nightmare you fear can come upon you without warning. It is a fact that people tend to get what it is they expect from life.
Our response: Our greatest hope for tomorrow is to have hope for tomorrow.
Success-minded people believe that they will always have a brighter and better tomorrow and work toward that end.
There may be a bump in the road now and then, but successful people even see times of failure as good things. They learn and grow by the mistakes they make as well as from the successes they achieve. That kind of thinking give way to a life that is always going forward and that sees tomorrow as the day when anything can happen.
#10: There is truth
A great deal of the confusion and lack of hope in the world today is due to the mistaken idea that there is no such thing as truth.
This comes in several ways. One is the thinking that truth is whatever you wish to believe it to be. Another is that truth is subject to change in culture and social structure.
Of course, there are those who just do not believe that truth is real at all. Truth is like all natural laws. Gravity does not stop existing just because you decide you do not like it. You can deny gravity and proclaim that it is all made up to restrict you from living the way you want to. Then, you go to the top of the roof and jump; see if your denial does you and good at all.
Our response: Truth is our anchor to reality and success.
Only by facing and embracing the truth can you enjoy the freedom and power that it brings.
Just like knowing good and evil, no one needs to be told the difference, we know that. Discovering the truth is not the issue, it is living by the truth.
Those who would achieve true success in life and achieve their dreams are those who believe, respect and live by the truth. There is no stronger force in the universe.
